Sheet Metal Fabrication Standards

Default linear and angular tolerances, thickness limits, finish standards, and weld certifications applied to laser-cut, bent, stamped, and welded sheet metal parts.

Drawings override defaults

These defaults apply only where your drawing is silent. Dimensions, weld symbols, flatness callouts, and finish specifications on your drawing always override the defaults above. Precision limits assume suitable geometry — tighter requirements are reviewed per part.

Default Tolerances

FeatureStandardPrecision / Limit
Laser cutting — linear±0.20 mm (±0.008")±0.10 mm (±0.004")
Bending — linear±0.25 mm (±0.010")±0.127 mm (±0.005")
Stamping — linear±0.10 mm (±0.004")±0.05 mm (±0.002")
Bending — angular±1.0°±0.5° (angle-monitoring press brakes)
Material thickness rangeLaser 0.5–20.0 mm / bending 0.5–12.0 mm / stamping 0.3–6.0 mmLaser up to 25.0 mm for mild steel; min wall 0.8 mm for weld integrity
Maximum blank size1,500 × 3,000 mm (59.1" × 118.1")Up to 1,524 × 3,048 mm (60" × 120") for structural panels

* Values match the specification tables on our Sheet Metal Fabrication service page. Tighter requirements are reviewed per part.

Finish Expectations

FinishSpecificationWhat to Expect
Powder coatingQualicoat Class 1 & 2 compliantThermosetting powder baked to a hard finish. High durability, impact/scratch resistance, full RAL color spectrum.
Zinc platingASTM B633Electroplated zinc with clear, yellow, or black chromate. Protects carbon steels from rust; excellent for interior brackets.
Anodizing & chem filmMIL-A-8625 & MIL-DTL-5541Anodizing (Type II/III) for aluminum wear and color. Chem film (Type I/II) for paint prep and electrical conductivity.
Hot-dip galvanizingASTM A123For heavy-duty outdoor steel weldments.
PassivationASTM A967Acid passivation to restore stainless steel corrosion resistance.

Edges, Burrs & Cosmetic Surfaces

Design bend reliefs at least 1.5× material thickness wide (1.5 mm minimum) and 1× material thickness deep to prevent tearing where a bend terminates along a flat edge. Keep holes at least 2× material thickness from sheet edges to prevent stretching and edge bulging, and 2.5–3× material thickness from bend lines to prevent hole elongation. Note edge condition and deburr requirements on your drawing — drawing callouts govern.

Inspection Options

  • Certified welding to AWS D1.1 (steel), AWS D1.2 (aluminum), AWS D1.6 (stainless steel)
  • ISO 3834 and ASME Section IX certified weldments for precision requirements
  • 2D/3D inspection scanners — equipment calibration validated on-site during the 50-point Dolphin Audit
  • Factory certifications matched to your industry: ISO 9001 baseline, plus ISO 14001, IATF 16949, and AWS D1.1 welder certifications

Vietnam Network Notes

DEWIN works with 30+ sheet metal factories across Vietnam operating fiber lasers up to 12kW, CNC press brakes up to 300T × 4m, stamping presses from 25T to 800T, and robotic welding cells. Vietnamese sheet metal parts are exempt from US Section 301 tariffs, while identical Chinese parts face 25%.
